In addition to your lawn being properly mowed a good fertilizing program is needed if you want a thick, weed free, dark green lawn. You can choose any combination of applications below. Poplar Bluff Lawn Care recommends five applications per year so that your lawn remains healthy, thick, weed free and dark green all season.
Early Spring application – Pre-emergent fertilizer
A pre-emergent will be used to prevent weeds from germinating and breaking through the surface of the soil. The pre-emergent also includes a fertilizer that will give your lawn the nutrients it needs for the growing season.
Late Spring application – Fertilizer/Weed and Feed
The amount of weeds in your lawn will determine what type of application will be used. A lawn that doesn’t contain a large amount of weeds will be treated with a fertilizer. The fertilizer will promote growth and strengthen the roots of your lawn. The weed and feed application will be used on a lawn with a small amount of weeds. It will remove these weeds while promoting growth and strengthening roots.
Summer application – Weed control
Weed control is the focus during summer in which broadleaf weeds will be removed. The most common broadleaf weed is the dandelion which produces a yellow flower. Under an established fertilizing program there should be only a few actively growing dandelions and/or other broadleaf weeds in your lawn. This application will be applied by spraying a chemical directly on troubled areas.
Fall application – Fertilizer
An excellent time to fertilize your lawn is in the Fall. Lower temperatures bring an increase in dew and rainfall thus extending the growing season. Fall fertilization will rejuvenate your lawn and encourage growth until your lawn goes dormant for the winter.
Winter application – Winterizer
A winter fertilizer is high in phosphorous and potassium which encourages root grown throughout the colder months. During this time of year your lawn is not growing, but the roots are storing water, nutrients, and energy just prior to going dormant. Winterizing your lawn gives it the nutrients it needs to survive the winter months.
Over seeding
The key to a thick and weed free lawn is over seeding. Over seeding is used to prevent a lawn from thinning. To prevent a lawn from thinning we will over aerate and overseed. Once this process is complete a starter fertilizer will be spread to promote seed growth.
WHAT IS CORE AERATION?
Core Aeration is the process of creating small cylinder-shaped holes in the soil of your lawn. These holes serve as an avenue which allows water, nutrients, and oxygen to reach the root system of your grass.
DOES YOUR LAWN NEED AERATING?
As a homeowner you can determine if your lawn should be aerated if:
· Your lawn receives a lot of foot traffic (kids, pets, etc.) Heavy traffic can result in soil compaction
· You Have puddles of water left after it rains, or if you have poor drainage
· The layer of thatch is greater than one-half inch. The thatch layer is the layer of decomposed material between the blades of grass and the soil
